HOW OLD ARE THE LOCKS?

Even if it's a brand new house could the builders still have a key? It happens. I know. In my days in property maintenance I saw many many occasions when 'extra' keys were cut for different trades to gain access easily. These keys were never handed back to the agent or manager in charge as they should never have been cut in the first place!

If you have recently moved house then we recommend you change the locks.

How do you know for sure that all the keys EVER cut for those locks are in your possession? Previous owners, friends, family, lodgers, etc could have keys. Was the previous owner ever burgled, did they ever lose keys or have a bag stolen containing keys? Were keys ever lent to someone.

Maybe you are a new tenant. Again can you be sure you are the only key holder?

The truth is you cannot know for sure about the key history of your property.

If you were burgled as a result of this then how difficult would it be to prove a burglary with no signs of forced entry? This style of burglary is on the increase.
